Hey guys, some of you know that I have been planning this for awhile but it is finally time to take my GT-R to the next level. Here are the current specs:
2010 - Pearl White with gray interior, 45k miles
Ecutek tuned by BSE performance
4" race exhaust (still has factory downpipes)
BSE Performance transmission cooler
Eibach swaybars
Dodson Low temp thermostats
Custom 2" brake ducts
AP Racing rotors and Carbotech pads
Amsoil fluids
18" wheels with Hoosier R7's for circuit, BBS CH-R for street

I've been tracking this car a lot over the past 3 years with NASA's Time Trial series which is really fun and adds a bit of competition to your trackday without having to seriously modify the car. The series is designed for street cars.

Now, however it is time for my wife and I to move into the full Race Group which means battling it out wheel to wheel with other club racers. There are a slew of safety items and requirements to pass NASA's tech inspection for race group. I hope to get all of it completed by April or May so we can enter our first race before the summer. Here is the list of things that I will be doing to the car over the next couple of months:

Weight Reduction
6 or 8 point welded-in roll cage (looking at the Nismo GT3 cage)
Fire suppression system with multiple actuators
Battery cutoff switch
Seat back brace
New drivers' seat
New 6 point harnesses
New livery / plastidip
New suspension bushings and lug studs
Hans device
Window net and arm restraints

There may be a few other details but I will keep this thread updated as the journey goes on.

This week the car is at a local body shop, Elite Automotive Finishes, to get the interior stripped out as well as the glass, doors, stereo, AC, airbags, etc etc. I will have a complete interior for sale soon if anyone is interested haha!
There is no turning back now!

Thanks man! The main goals right now are safety and passing the rigorous tech inspection. Once I get a few races under my belt then I will start making it go faster.
And yes, I removed the old plastidip a couple of months ago - gonna do a different look this time around!

Nice! I wouldn't recommend plasti dip. From my experience it will not hold up to the track abuse. I'm slowly working my way into time trails but even in HPDEs the dip I tried wouldn't hold up.

I've had the opposite experience, but I did like 10-15 coats on the front bumper and leading edge of the hood. My old hood has a few small rock chips but not nearly as bad as if it was unprotected.

I really like where this is going! Bad ass build.

Stripping the inside completely? Have you thought about carbon/steel door inserts?

this is so sweet!  totally jealous!

How competitive is the group you will be running in? Like what other cars?

Unlike time trials, with a NASA wheel to wheel race how many laps do you do?

Finally what the hell is a seat back brace?

In7anity!!

I definitely have and it is going to depend on the cage. In that pic you can see the side X Brace is inward so that it doesn't interfere with the door. This is fine, but it has two disadvantages - it makes it harder to get in and out of the car, and it leaves less crumple zone in case of a hard impact on the side. I don't want that X Brace to be 6" from my legs.
I'm considering a modified NASCAR style door bar that bends into the door shell and gives more crumple zone, while still adding some chassis rigidity like you get with the X Brace in your photo.

Honestly I am waiting for details on a pre-fabbed cage from Custom Cages UK. They make a replica of the GT3 Nismo cage, but it may not be in the correct specs to pass NASA tech. The GT3 cars are a lot lighter than mine and can get away with thinner tubing than what I need. :/

The cage is the biggest piece of this project - once it is done then things will start falling into place.

Thanks man! The group can get pretty competitive for a bunch of weekend warriors. I'm not sure which class I will fall into but some of the cars I'll be going up against are mustangs, camaros, GT3 Porsches, NSX's, Vipers, Corvettes, etc. All of which have various levels of modification. Everyone is running Hoosier R7's or full slicks and has some amount of aero package. The aero is where I will be weakest to start off with, but I have plans to address that next year...

Most races are 30 minutes long, as many laps as you can do. There is an enduro event once per year that runs for 4 hours. And we will also be eligible for the 25 hrs of Thunderhill once I get past rookie status. We need to run 8 races with no incidents before becoming non-rookies.

A seat back brace is exactly what it sounds like. A metal plate formed the back of the seat and attached to the roll cage. It supports the back of the seat in hard rear-end collisions. Some seats carry an FIA rating which precludes the need for the brace. I haven't picked out a seat yet, so that might factor into the decision.

Both 7racer and I had a local shop Late Apex make us 6 point cages and they do a lot of the race cars here as well. Their pricing was good too so you may want to look at local options that could create a cage that meets the specs and wouldn't need to be shipped from overseas.

I am possibly doing some custom interior work soon so let me know when you sell the interior

Yeah dude, definitely. There are 2 good shops here in town that could build what I want but it comes at a price. I have built a few cages before but never inside of a car. There are some tricks and nuances that I will need to learn. Having a shop do it would cost 6-7k whereas I can do it myself for 2k and then buy all the other stuff I need for safety with the money leftover. I'm not sure that my time is quite that valuable, heh!

Thanks Tim! I'm excited for sure! The car isn't fully stripped yet but I am going to weigh it soon after. I will definitely post up but I'm hoping it comes in below 3500 lbs without me in it.

I got the car back today from the body shop. They are estimating at least 300 lbs removed, and that's after I removed the passenger seat. Here are some more pics of the stripped interior. I plan to leave the dash in place, pretty much everything under it has been removed. The crossbar, ac unit, blower motor, airbags etc are all gone now.

Will it be 3500 with the full cage?
