this seems to happen to a few people. they buy a tuned or built gtr and something goes wrong. let's help the community by adding tips on what to do, especially for those who are clueless (nothing wrong with that).

for instance... if you are driving the build back home across states ... make sure it has a 91oct tune. make sure to log it the whole trip. elevation changes throughout different states could change and be harmful. get gas from good stations to avoid bad gas.

-make sure you have data logs that are extremely recent.

-make sure a well known gtr shop has worked on it.

-make sure the hardware is what it is

-inspect the rear lsd for cracks.

-inspect the fluids.

-have it taken to a gtr shop to get inspected.

-check ic pipes for oil

-check all downpipe studs are there

-check the crank case pressure

-check the oil gally gasket is not blown

what other tips do shops and members recommend?

Most importantly, check the quality of the parts used.  Typically, people that skimp on parts do the same with maintenance and install quality.  Clearly not always the case but, generally, I think someone that is not afraid to invest in high quality has a stringer desire to care for that quality.

A reputable shop and high quality parts in the build are two things you do not want to deviate from.  They are make or break deals as far as I see it.

In regards to the original post, a few comments.

-inspect the rear lsd for cracks - this isn't really a reasonable thing to check, nor is it a common failure point.  It would be an expensive inspection.

-check ic pipes for oil - This doesn't really tell you anything other than if it needs some work in the breather department.  Doesn't necessarily indicate a problem.

-check the crank case pressure - This would need to be done on a dyno pull at high power to be meaningful.

-check the oil gally gasket is not blown -  This is not really reasonable to check either.  It's a ton of work pulling the front cover off an engine.

Things I would recommend doing:

Do an oil change and cut open the filter, look for signs of engine problems, bearing material or other in the filter.

Do a leakdown test on the engine.  It's a bit of work, but it's a great indicator of engine health.

Also, disconnect EVERY electronic connection, do the hokie pokie, and then check continuity

If the car owner has a hot lady, don't buy, they couldn't keep their paws off each other, you know there's gonna be sex mud, and not the good kind.

Ask the tuner of the car to tell you about how he tuned the car, then tell him he needs to explain in higher resolution, or you're looking elsewhere.

I feel you are directing your post to me :wavecry:

Glad nightmare is over. Do you think driving on a 93oct map with 91 oct but driving like grandma 500 miles would hurt it?

this was something I've been thinking about posting for a while, sorry not directed at you specifically, but I did decide to make it after I read your thread.

I honestly can't tell you if what you did was an issue or not. if you had datalogs we would know for sure. I know I wouldn't have done that myself, but that is just my opinion, not based on anything. data rules all.
