It's always safer to go with a torque rating (don't know what's the number for our car), especially if you're reinstalling one. By the way, the 1/4-turn spec is for conical seats and reinstalled crush washer plugs. With new crush washer plugs (like the OEMs), it's usually 3/4. But it's impossible to measure that with the little space available, so invest in a torque wrench and do the job right ;). Having said that, never seen a spark plug so freaking long; that's crazy. Probably a turbo thing, since this is my first such car.

Nah, just a very deep head.  Plug thread length can be relative to "cool" or "hot" plugs, but that one is so long because the head top to combustion chamber distance is so great.  You can see on the threads that only the outer 1/3 of the plug is in the combustion chamber.

Great write up on the plug change!

FYI for the next guy spark plug torque for our cars is 20 nm or 177 in lbs or 14.75 ft lbs

Been working with enshiu on my car for the past 2 days. This guy is a mad scientist. He knows his stuff about GT-Rs. We spent the past few days changing brakes, rotors and upgrading my  gotboost full intercooler piping. Enshiu will post pics of my car later.

You also need a 5mm Allen bit/T30 torx screwdriver for the plenum cover.

Dont overtorque your spark plugs as this may hit the pistons.

I installed those 5 years ago......

A little bit noticable at the mid range rpm.

I can't ever remember any "V" engine being that easy. You must be reminiscing about the inline 4, FWD days.

Definitely disagree...

See the spark plugs and wires?

Replacing those plugs, with the proper tools (had to have either a "spark plug wrench", or a ratchet with a flex extension on it), took about 15 minutes.

Replacing the distributor cap, AND rotor, AND wires added about 15 more TOTAL minutes to the job.

Plugs were about $1.35 each.  Cap was about $6.  Rotor was $3, wires were $10.  Well, it was 1985 too.

But other than there being 8 plugs, it took almost no time at all.

Oh, and just for fun, it required API SC rated oil.  And had a chart in the manual for which one was most appropriate for your temperature range.  And NOTHING in the manual went from 0 deg to 100 deg F, which was the temp range where I lived.  Winter we used 10W-30, summer 20W-40 if you could find it, or just straight 30 or 40 weight.  By 1985 we DID have 10W-40, which wasn't in the manual from 1967 and no one knew if we could use it year round (I still don't know amongst the crap SF spec oils we had at the time if they were even heat stable).

We've come so far.  If you could go back to 1967, buy a Fairlane, and put modern SN 0W-40 into the damn thing, it'd probably make 200,000 miles.  AND modern transmission fluid in that old C4, which would last nearly 90,000 miles on THEN available "Ford type F" transmission fluid (modern F-spec is wayy wayyy better) the cars mechanicals would probably last as long as modern cars.  Of course the dashboard, which was the crash zone for your face, and made out of solid metal wasn't very suitable then or now for crash standards.  But what we could do if we could go back.

If you use copper grease on the spark plug threads don't go over 12 ft lbs as it has grease on it

it will torque 10% more  than the wrench says due lubrication.
